Biography
A practice shaped by curiosity, patience and respect.
Originally from Italy and now based in Melbourne, Gianluca Carretta developed his photographic practice through years of travel, observation and an enduring fascination with the natural world.
His background in hospitality first took him across countries and cultures, where photography became a way of recording memory and paying closer attention to place. After returning to Australia in 2017, he committed himself to a professional life in photography.
Formal studies in photography and photo imaging at RMIT University strengthened the technical foundations of his practice. Those foundations are balanced by an instinctive way of working in the field—waiting for gesture, light and environment to briefly align.
Rather than presenting wildlife as spectacle, Carretta searches for moments that feel intimate and psychologically present. His images hold space for the individuality of each subject and the complexity of the environments they inhabit.
The Practice
Wildlife observed without interruption.
Carretta’s work is built slowly. Time in the field allows the visible drama of wildlife photography to settle into something more considered: an encounter shaped equally by behaviour, atmosphere and restraint.
Patience
Waiting is part of the image-making process. The photograph arrives only when the subject is comfortable enough to behave naturally.
Behaviour
Gesture, interaction and fleeting movement become the narrative. Each frame is grounded in attention to the life unfolding within it.
Presence
Light and composition are used to create emotional proximity, allowing the subject to feel immediate without becoming theatrical.
