Biography
Curiosity, patience and respect.
Gianluca Carretta was born in Italy and lives in Melbourne. His practice grew out of years of travel, close observation and a lasting fascination with the natural world.
A career in hospitality first took him across countries and cultures. Photography became his way of recording memory and paying closer attention to place. In 2017 he committed to photography full time.
He studied photography and photo imaging at RMIT University. That technical grounding sits alongside an instinctive way of working in the field: waiting for gesture, light and setting to align for a moment.
He looks for encounters that feel intimate and psychologically present. Each image makes room for the individual animal and the complexity of the place it lives.
The practice
Wildlife observed without interruption.
His work is built slowly. Time in the field lets the obvious drama of wildlife photography settle into something more considered: an encounter shaped by behaviour, atmosphere and restraint.
01
Patience
Waiting is part of the work. The photograph arrives only when the animal is at ease enough to behave naturally.
02
Behaviour
Gesture, interaction and fleeting movement carry the story. Each frame attends to the life unfolding inside it.
03
Presence
Light and composition bring the viewer close. The subject feels immediate and never theatrical.
