John Wiseman · Double Trouble
Biography
A lifetime waiting for one honest moment.
John Wiseman is an Australian wildlife photographer whose practice is built on close observation, technical discipline and a genuine fascination with animal behaviour.
After a successful career in finance, John committed himself fully to photography. The discipline, preparation and attention that shaped his business career followed him into the field, where success depends on patience rather than control.
Over more than 25 years, he has photographed wildlife across six continents. His archive spans African mammals, South American hummingbirds, Australian birdlife, reptiles, insects and remote natural environments.
John’s work moves beyond identification or spectacle. The strongest photographs reveal behaviour, vulnerability, humour, tension or stillness—moments in which the animal appears fully present rather than merely observed.
Alongside his fine art practice, John is an experienced educator, speaker and photographic judge. His teaching is grounded in practical field knowledge, animal welfare and confident decision-making under changing conditions.
Artistic Practice
Respectfully intruding.
John describes photography as a respectful intrusion into a moment in time. The subject comes first, and the photograph must be earned through preparation, patience and an understanding of natural behaviour.
Observe before reacting.
Understanding movement and behaviour creates stronger photographs than simply chasing action. Anticipation begins long before the shutter is released.
Be ready when the moment arrives.
Fast movement, changing light and unpredictable subjects demand technical fluency so instinct can take over when the encounter becomes fleeting.
Presence over spectacle.
The strongest image may reveal humour, vulnerability, tension or stillness rather than dramatic action. Character gives the encounter its lasting meaning.
The photograph never comes first.
Animal welfare and natural behaviour remain more important than any image. Distance, timing and field decisions are guided by respect for the subject and its environment.
