Biography
A refined sensitivity to place.
Simon Ray is a fine art photographer based in Canberra, on Ngunnawal Country. Light, perspective and atmosphere shape his practice.
He works across landscapes, coastlines, aerial environments, urban spaces and live music. He brings the same concerns to each: scale, structure, timing and emotional presence.
From the air, his work finds colour, repetition and pattern that stay hidden at ground level. It also looks at mining traces and altered terrain, holding beauty and disturbance together. His coastal and urban photographs are quieter, with open space and a few carefully placed figures setting the proportion.
His work has been recognised in national landscape, urban and professional awards, including an APP Gold Award and three Highly Commended honours in the urban category of The Landscape Awards in 2025.
