Biography

A refined sensitivity to place.

Simon Ray is a Canberra-based fine art photographer whose practice is shaped by light, perspective, atmosphere and a sustained curiosity about the world around him.

His work moves across landscapes, coastlines, aerial environments, urban spaces and live music. Rather than treating these subjects as separate genres, Simon approaches each through the same underlying concerns: scale, structure, timing and emotional presence.

Observation is central to the practice. A shifting cloud, an elevated vantage point, the geometry of a pool or the energy of a live performance becomes an opportunity to create images that balance technical control with instinctive response.

Simon’s aerial work reveals colour, repetition and pattern that remain hidden at ground level. His coastal and urban photographs are often quieter, using space and carefully placed human figures to create a sense of stillness and proportion.

With national recognition across landscape, urban and professional photographic awards, his imagery continues to develop through travel, experimentation and a commitment to finely produced photographic prints.

Artistic Practice

Perspective changes what can be seen.

Simon’s images range from restrained coastal scenes to saturated aerial abstractions. Across each body of work, composition is used to organise complexity and create a deliberate relationship between the viewer, the subject and the surrounding space.

Newcastle Ocean Baths photographed by Simon Ray
01 · Coastal

Stillness shaped by architecture and water.

Ocean pools, coastlines and open horizons are composed with restraint, allowing colour, human scale and negative space to carry the image.

02 · Aerial

The landscape becomes colour and pattern.

From above, agricultural land and altered terrain become abstract compositions of repetition, division and unexpected chromatic intensity.

03 · Environment

Beauty and disturbance held together.

Mining traces and transformed landscapes are presented without easy resolution, balancing visual seduction with evidence of human intervention.

04 · Urban & Live Music

Structure, timing and human energy.

In built environments and live performance, Simon responds to geometry, gesture and fleeting shifts in light—finding intimacy within public spaces and shared moments.
